What is Atrial Fibrillation?

The heart is an organ that works regularly and systematically. In this working system, there are electrical cells that enable the heart muscle to contract and blood to be pumped throughout the body. Due to the disruption of this electrical order in the heart, the two upper atria begin to beat abnormally. In this way, the atria of the heart beating very fast and irregularly is called atrial fibrillation (AF).

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders that can have serious consequences. It can be seen at any age, but its incidence increases with aging. It has a tendency to become chronic. Blood clots may occur due to vibration of the atria. This can cause paralysis (stroke). The risk of stroke is higher in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, it can also cause other problems, especially heart failure. Therefore, treatment and close monitoring of the disease is important.
