In cases where the heart valve is damaged beyond repair or the stenosis or insufficiency of the valve is severe, heart valve replacement is required. Natural or artificial valves are used in heart valve replacement. Natural heart valve replacement is done with valves taken from animals. Artificial heart valves are made of metal and are more durable than natural valves. However, if an artificial heart valve is installed, patients must use blood thinners for life.
